Krista Tippett on the Communal Nature of Hope

Individualism cuts us off from a community of hope

Krista Tippett joined Mike Cosper on Christianity Today’s podcast The Bulletin to discuss the differences between wishful thinking and hope. She offered several insightful perspectives on the nature of hope, one being its communal nature.

Tippett remarked that individualism, what she called “the cult of the individual,” is one of “the most corrosive tenets of American culture,” infecting every dimension of our lives, including the religious. It cuts us off from a community of hope, said Tippett. None of us can hold onto hope at all times; we need a community to hold onto it for us when our hope waivers. Alone, our hope dies.
